Police: 12-year-old set fire that left 75 homeless

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Police say a 12-year-old boy has been charged with setting a fire that destroyed three buildings and left 75 people homeless in Maine’s second-biggest city.

Police Chief Michael Bussiere told reporters Thursday that the youngster, who’s in custody, will be arraigned Monday in juvenile court. He said no other arrests are anticipated.

The fire broke out late Monday afternoon in a condemned apartment house and spread to two other buildings. No people were hurt but several pets died.

Bussiere says the boy set a fire behind the first building where the fire originated. The Sun Journal newspaper says he declined to comment on the boy’s motive or whether he lived in the building. The building was condemned a month ago, but officials said six of the nine units were still occupied at the time of the fire.
