Injured climber wakes from coma

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — A Fairbanks man who broke both legs while climbing a mountain north of Nome has woken from a coma.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says Andy Sterns was in a coma for more than a week before waking up on Sunday.

Sterns’ friend, Ann Farris, says he is unable to talk but can point out letters on a piece of paper.

The 46-year-old man was swept up in an avalanche April 19 while climbing Mount Osborn about 40 miles north of Nome.

He was moved this week out of the intensive care unit at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.
