Downstate woman, 99, dies in house fire

BENTON — State fire investigators are trying to pinpoint what caused a southern Illinois house fire that killed a 99-year-old woman.

Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler says Dorothy Linn died of smoke inhalation during the blaze Wednesday in her home near Benton.

Authorities say that after firefighters responded to a neighbor’s report of a fire at Linn’s home, the woman was found unresponsive on the kitchen floor.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
