MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Magazine of History’s spring issue will feature the curious tale of a Milwaukee woman who pretended to be a man in the 1900s.
Matthew J. Prigge’s story will chronicle the life of Cora Anderson. Anderson, who was of African-American and American Indian descent, created opportunities for herself by posing as a man named Ralphero E. Kerwineo for more than a decade. She was finally arrested in 1914 after her wife told police Kerwineo was actually a woman.
Wisconsin Historical Society members will receive it in the mail in the next few days. Anyone who joins the society before the summer issue comes out in June would receive the spring edition as well. Non-members can purchase the spring issue at the society’s Madison museum beginning in June.
