Crist donor, lawmaker’s father guilty of fraud

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — A major donor to Charlie Crist’s gubernatorial campaign and the father of state Rep. Dane Eagle faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine after pleading guilty in federal court to six counts of fraud.

Greg Eagle, who contributed $1 million to a political organization that helped Crist get elected in 2006, pleaded guilty to the charges Thursday. Eagle was a part of a group of 52 people who owned 101 acres of undeveloped Cape Coral land.

He borrowed $17 million with a mortgage loan on the property without telling the other beneficiaries, used it for other projects and then defaulted on the loan.

Rep. Eagle was a travel aide to Crist and later worked on Crist’s unsuccessful 2010 Senate campaign. He was elected last year.
