Off-duty civilian cop praised as Fort Hood hero

November 7, 2009

KILLEEN, Texas -- A civilian police officer is being praised for taking down a man suspected of opening fire on soldiers at Fort Hood when she shot him in the torso.

Police officials said Fort Hood police Sgt. Kimberly Munley got the call of "shots fired." The Soldier Readiness Processing Center isn't on Munley's beat, but she was in the area because her vehicle was in the shop.

Munley, 34, was on the scene within three minutes.

As she approached the building, a soldier emerged from a door with a gunman in pursuit. The officer fired, and the uniformed shooter wheeled and charged.

Munley was hit at least three times -- twice in the left leg and once in her right wrist. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was hit four times.

Munley's boss, Chuck Medley, said Friday that Hasan charged at Munley with a gun in each hand.

Medley said Munley shot Hasan in the upper torso, allowing officers to take him into custody.

Munley is from Pennsylvania, used to be in the Army, and is married to a Fort Bragg, N.C., soldier. She was recovering Friday at a hospital.
