Happy Pi Day! No, not coconut, chocolate, or blueberry. Not even March 14 – the day typically designated as Pi Day.

Instead, Tuesday officially became Pi Day at around 1:30 p.m. Chicago time, when the U.S. population hit 314,159,265 residents – also known as mathematical constant pi (3.14159265) times 100 million.

“This is a once in many generations event... so go out and celebrate this American pi,” said Census Bureau Chief Demographer Howard Hogan.

Unfortunately, mathematicians didn’t have long to celebrate – the population has already surpassed 314,159,495 residents.
