After Italian cruise accident, Carnival Corp. wants safety review

MIAMI (AP) — Carnival Corp., the parent company of Costa Cruises, has announced a comprehensive audit and review of all safety and emergency response procedures across all 10 of the company’s cruise lines.

Carnival CEO Micky Arison said in a news release Thursday that last week’s accident of the Costa Concordia in Italy has called into question the company’s safety and emergency response procedures and practices. He says the review will make sure a similar accident doesn’t happen again.

The review is being led by retired U.S. Navy Capt. James Hunn. He is currently the company’s senior vice president of Maritime Policy & Compliance.

Carnival says it also welcomes a comprehensive evaluation of safety regulations by the International Maritime Organization. The Cruise Lines International Association requested the evaluation earlier Thursday.
