Rezko attorneys seek to cancel sentencing date

December 15, 2008

Tony Rezko's lawyers will ask a federal judge this morning to cancel his sentencing date as he continues his discussions with federal authorities.

The convicted former adviser and fund-raiser to Gov. Blagojevich has been providing information to federal prosecutors since his summer's conviction.

At the time, he was one of the most significant cooperators to step forward in the probe against the governor.

But Rezko's accommodations in solitary confinement at a federal prison downtown got to be too much for him and he recently asked for a rushed sentencing that was set for Jan. 6.

If Rezko had the upper hand, he may have lost it last week.

Blagojevich was charged in shakedown schemes and the feds revealed they had numerous secret recordings of the governor. Court documents also revealed the cooperation of another member of the governor's inner circle -- John Wyma.

Rezko has talked to the government about alleged corruption related to the governor, according to government papers unsealed last week. The government is still judging his reliability, investigators say, and Rezko has not formally signed a plea deal.
