London's first female taxi driver started her first day on the job. Shelia O'Neill, a former nurse in the South African war, said she'll carry a complete emergency medical kit and administer first aid to all who need it. O'Neill started her new career despite being "handicapped to a certain extent by the distinction made against her sex everywhere in the country." Meanwhile, O'Neill said: "Scotland Yard refuses me a permit to ply for hire at the ordinary cab stands." She plans to fight the refusal.
