'Senior' moment from Roland Burris

Introduces Dick Durbin with gaffe during Joe Biden visit

April 28, 2009

Gaffe-prone Vice President Joe Biden was out-gaffed during his Chicago appearance Monday when U.S. Sen. Roland Burris tried to introduce fellow Sen. Dick Durbin.

"And now, it is my pleasure to introduce the senior citizen from the great state of Illinois," Burris said, then, amid laughter, corrected himself: "The senior senator. I did that at a committee hearing one time. . . . I am older than him."

Burris is 71. Durbin, asked his age after the event, broke into a rendition of Paul McCartney's "When I'm 64."

Biden weighed in with his own gaffe later at the University of Illinois at Chicago, saying, "All 32 of Chicago's aldermen are in attendance." Chicago has 50 aldermen.
