House panel subpeonas records
The House panel weighing whether to impeach Gov. Blagojevich has subpoenaed records from the governor's campaign fund, the panel's chairman said today.
A subpoena went out to Friends of Blagojevich for all contributions, donors and dates of the contributions between July 1 and Dec. 31, 2008, said House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago), chairwoman of the House Special Investigative Committee.
A spokesman for House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) said the request was made to examine whether contributions were made to the governor in relation to legislation he signed diverting casino proceeds to the horse-racing industry.
Currie said the panel has been given assurances by Blagojevich's campaign that it would respond sometime Thursday, though it is unclear what exactly the committee will get.
"We have since been informed by people involved in the committee that some of that information may not be available," Currie said. "Apparently, the U.S. attorney took some of that material away with them, and you’re not allowed to make copies."
