The LaSalle County Board is considering a proposal to let a Missouri company operate a sand mine near Starved Rock State Park. Many land owners, environmentalists and residents oppose that, saying it would cause noise, vibrations, dust and potential water pollution that could hurt wildlife and enjoyment of the park. Mississippi Sand President Tony Giordano says his company will do everything possible to lessen any impact on the park. His company would sell the sand to companies that use it in extracting gas and oil from deep underground. The county board will meet Thursday, though Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon has asked members to postpone a vote so her office can review the transcript a Zoning Board of Appeals meeting. That panel recommended approval of the mine’s permit.
