The agency running the South Shore commuter railway is holding public hearings on a proposed 5 percent fare increase starting next month, raising the cost of a one-way trip between downtown Chicago and South Bend, Ind., by 60 cents, to $11.75. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District also might change its policy for active-duty military personnel to charge them half-fare instead of letting them ride for free. The district is holding hearings Tuesday in Gary, Wednesday in Chesterton and Thursday in Hammond. Its board is set to consider the fare increase Jan. 27.
