Parents charged after son, 5, accidentally shoots himself
Parents of the 5-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself at his family's South Side residence were charged Sunday in connection with the incident, Chicago Police said.
The boy, who accidentally shot himself in the head, was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital. His condition was not available Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said, because his family had not given permission to release such information.
Police and paramedics were summoned to the family's home in the 6100 block of South Wabash about 5:45 p.m. Saturday after a report that a child had been shot there.
The boy's father, Cortney Rodgers Sr., 26, was charged with one count each of endangering the life and health of a child, possessing a firearm without a valid firearm owner's identification card and failing to register a firearm.
The boy's mother, Dorothy Hayden, 27, was charged with one count of endangering the life and health of a child.
The parents are scheduled to appear in court May 19 in connection with the misdemeanor charges.
