Chicago could break record for latest first snowfall

Updated: January 8, 2012 8:13AM

Although there may be a speck of snow Thursday night, without a measurable snowfall Chicago may make a good run at breaking the record for the latest first snowfall ever.

So far this year, the city has seen only a trace of snow and Rockford has seen only 0.1 inches of snow. The chances for any “meaningful” accumulating snowfall is looking low through early next week, the National Weather Service says.

Last year at this time, we already had 6.9 inches of snow; in 2009 6.5 inches; in 2008 9.1 inches and in 2006 9.0 inches.

But don’t think we’ll get off easy this season. This is the Midwest and all it would take is one storm to quickly wipe out any snowfall deficits from average, the Weather Service warns. Sun-Times Media
