Teacher fatally struck by car while riding bike in Logan Square

May 1, 2008

A 24-year-old grade school teacher was killed Wednesday afternoon when her bicycle was struck by a car in the Logan Square neighborhood.

The accident was the second bike fatality in the Northwest Side neighborhood in two weeks.

Amanda Annis of 3260 W. Belden Ave. was fatally struck by a car Wednesday while on her bike at 2000 N. Kedzie Ave., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Cordell Curtis, 23, of the 9200 block of South Justine Street, was driving the vehicle that struck Annis. He has been cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, no insurance and reckless driving, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

The crash happened about 2:50 p.m. and the driver remained on the scene, News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

An investigation revealed Annis was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti.

Annis was a fifth-grade teacher at Humboldt Community Christian School, 1847 N. Humboldt Blvd., according to her profile on Facebook.com. Annis graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 2005.

The accident is the second bicycle-related death in the Logan Square neighborhood in the last 10 days. On April 20, Tyler Fabeck, 22, was fatally struck by a car in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard when he attempted to make a left turn in front of a car.

Following the crash, Shakespeare District police urged city cyclists to follow all traffic signals and wear proper safety gear while riding.
