Couldn’t wait until next week’s downtown parade, holiday lights and fun?

You didn’t have to.

The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival officially kicked off the holiday season on Saturday with a parade complete with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, more than 30 floats, marching bands and celebrities. The parade and lighting of more than 200 trees on North Michigan Avenue started at 5:30 p.m. and culminated with fireworks over the Chicago River at 6:55 p.m.

The day of free activities actually began at 11 a.m. with live music and family-themed activities featured at Pioneer Court, 401 N. Michigan..

It’s the 20th anniversary of the lights festival, which typically is held the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It’s sponsored by BMO Harris Bank.

If you didn’t make it downtown, WLS-Channel 7 plans will air it several times next month.
