A dare between friends is believed to have ended in a 17-year-old girl being struck and killed by a freight train on the Far South Side.

The girl was hit Thursday afternoon after she and a friend dared each other to run across the tracks, a source said. The friend made it across in time, but she did not.

Erica Frye of the 5000 block of South Laflin, was hit at West 115th Street and South Perry Avenue at about 5 p.m., and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later, authorities said.

A spokesman for the company that operates the train was not immediately available.
