A man riding his bike to meet friends was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Southwest Side Pilsen neighborhood early Tuesday, police said. Officers caught up with the driver and arrested him.
The 30-year-old man was riding his bike in the 1100 block of West 18th Street when he was struck about 12:52 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of a passenger car apparently veered into the cyclist and drove away after striking him, Monroe District police said.
The man was on his way to visit friends when he was hit, police said.
Nearby police officers found a vehicle matching the description of the car and arrested the driver, police said. Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.
The driver, an adult male, was also taken to Stroger Hospital, Police Major Accident Investigation Unit Sgt. Tim Capparelli said, but he did not know his condition.
Charges are pending.
