Judge won't jail R. Kelly

December 21, 2007

Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan ruled this morning that R & B superstar R. Kelly can remain free on bond and continue his concert tour, including tonight's show at the United Center.

Gaughan said he did not want to put Kelly's employees out of work during the holiday season and disappoint people who had bought tickets to his concerts. However, Gaughan said Kelly must cancel a Jan. 13 concert in Hampton, Va., so he does not miss a Jan. 14 court date.

Gaughan voiced concern about reports that Kelly's tour bus had been stopped for speeding - one reason he missed a court hearing this week and got himself into hot water with Gaughan.

Prosecutors say the bus was traveling at 101 mph. Gaughan told Kelly it could have been disastrous if the tour bus had hit a school bus.

"I'd like to say I'm sorry for this whole incident, and next time, I would get a plane," said Kelly, who is known to have a fear of flying.

Kelly is accused of having sex with an underage girl and videotaping it. Gaughan today said his trial will begin May 9.

Tonight's concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the United Center, with Keyshia Cole and J. Holiday opening.
