Two rescued after falling into lake downtown

Two people -- one of them in a wheelchair -- were hospitalized Friday night when they were rescued by police and fire crews after falling into Lake Michigan at DuSable Harbor downtown.

The two victims, a 60-year-old woman -- who was in a wheelchair -- and a 59-year-old man, had attended a party on the 100 block of North Lake Shore Drive Friday night, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer. The Columbia Yacht Club is at Lake Shore Drive and Randolph Street, which is 150 North, according to the yacht club’s website.

About 9:45 p.m., the man was wheeling the woman down a ramp when the two accidentally fell into the water, Greer said.

Fire Department personnel and the Police Marine Unit responded to the scene. Police pulled the woman from the water, while fire department crews pulled the man from the water, Greer said.

Both were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Rich Rosado. The woman was listed in critical condition, while the man was in “stable” condition, according to police and fire officials.

Both are expected to survive, Greer said.
