A third Town Hall District police officer has been stripped of his police powers in connection with an investigation into allegations that his two partners sexually assaulted a North Side woman at her home and in a police SUV early Wednesday while on duty, Chicago Police confirmed Saturday.
The third officer, who is a partner of the two originally accused and is assigned to the same police car, was not on duty that morning. But police sources said the officer was present during a similar incident that allegedly occurred in the past involving his two partners.
Late Saturday, police said in a written statement that “an outcome of this investigation is the identification of an earlier incident that previously had not been reported.’’ Details of the incident were not provided.
The statement also confirmed that the third officer “has been relieved of his police powers and placed in an administrative assignment pending resolution of the allegation.’’ The actions taken against the third officer were first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Police sources said the third officer’s badge and service weapon were taken away Friday, as had been done with the other officers. The officer will have no face-to-face contact with the public but will still get a paycheck, the sources said.
Although the statement noted that the third officer faced allegations of “misconduct,’’ it specifically said the allegations “are not criminal at this time or directly associated with’’ the original incident Wednesday.
As of Saturday evening, no charges had been filed against any of the officers, police spokesman Daniel O’Brien said.
The original incident involving the two officers allegedly began early Wednesday when the 22-year-old woman was walking near Sheffield and Addison.
According to a police report, the woman was crying after leaving a male friend’s home where they had been drinking and arguing.
At some point, she was approached by a marked Chicago Police Tahoe SUV with two male officers inside, the report said. They offered her a ride home and she accepted.
The woman told police that during the ride, she had sex with one of the officers in a passenger seat of the SUV and that she did not say “no,” according to the report. When they arrived at her apartment in the 1300 block of West Greenleaf, they went inside, where they played strip poker and she had sex with one officer in her bed.
According to the report, the woman, who later said she felt intimidated by the officers and was afraid to say “no” to their sexual advances, eventually ran from her apartment screaming, and a neighbor called police.
A second neighbor told police he saw a naked man running down the hallway and another man dressed in a Chicago Police uniform walking away, according to the report
A cell phone belonging to one of the suspects was found in the woman’s room, the report said.
