Task force wants CPS school consolidations halted

A legislative task force agreed late Monday to ask Interim Schools CEO Terry Mazany to halt all proposed school consolidations until the panel presents its recommendations on school facility decisions in bill form to the Legislature.
The task force raised “grave concerns” about last week’s proposals to fold eight schools into six others and slowly kill off a 15th school.
Members said schools were targeted despite rising scores, contradicting Mazany’s contention that some have too few students to provide a quality education.
After 11 months of work, the task force is expected to produce a bill shortly recommending a more transparent process for making school facility decisions.
