Elgin family feud includes sword attack on TV

An Elgin police officer thought he had resolved a domestic squabble between a woman and her niece — until he was called back 10 minutes later aftere the younger woman pulled out a sword and started hitting things.
The officer was called about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday because the two women were arguing.
They had been living together, but the aunt wanted the niece to move out, and the niece was afraid that if she left that afternoon, her aunt would throw her belongings on the lawn. The officer got the niece to promise to leave and the aunt to promise not to throw out the belongings, and then he left.
Ten minutes later, the aunt called for police help again, saying her niece had picked up a black sword and had repeatedly struck the home’s TV set with it and knocked a 2-inch hole in a wall.
When the aunt said she did not want to press charges the officer advised her to ask the landlord to start eviction proceedings against the niece.
