A Hinsdale family has won a furnished modern rustic mountain Vermont home in an HGTV contest.
The 3,400-square-foot house — amongst ski slopes at Mount Mansfield in Stowe — is part of a $2 million prize package prize that includes a new GMC Acadia Denali and $500,000. The house sleeps 14 people and features an enclosed hot tub that’s next to an outdoor fireplace.
HGTV’s Monica Pedersen showed up with a television crew Tuesday morning to surprise Eric and Catherine Makstenieks at their home for a program to air at 7 p.m. March 19.
“We’re just incredible lucky and fortunate,” said Eric Makstenieks.
And persistent. Makstenieks said he has entered the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway, as well as other HGTV home giveaway contests, since 2003. He entered this one a couple of times daily online from July through February.
“The houses in the contests were always just beautiful,” he said.
The Maksteniekses will probably not move to Vermont. The couple — he is a stay-at-home dad, and she is on maternity leave from her job in compliance at an investment bank — have two children; a 3-year-old and a 6-week-old. “We have roots here. So, it would be a vacation home for us. We haven’t decided what our financial decision would be yet.”
