Nearly 100 firefighters battle West Side factory blaze

Nearly 100 firefighters are in “defensive mode” responding to an extra-alarm blaze and a hazardous materials situation at a Near West Side factory early Friday.

Crews are currently responding to the extra alarm blaze in the 2100 block of West Fulton Street, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

Ninety-nine firefighters and 39 pieces of equipment are in defensive mode battling the blaze at the two-story, 50 foot by 125 foot commercial structure, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said.

The fire is in a commercial structure, and a Level I HazMat alarm has also been called for the incident, Rosado said. Emergency crews were notified of the blaze sometime after 4 a.m. and will likely “be there a while” battling the blaze, he said.

The building on fire is a factory, and no injuries have been reported as of 5 a.m., Gaines said.

Bond Corporation, a manufacturer of tack cloth, is located near that address, according to the company’s website.
