State investigators are looking into the death of an 8-month-old Lake View neighborhood boy who police say was suffocated by his despondent mother.
The woman called her husband to say she “did something to the baby” and “it is too late,” according to police. In response, firefighters forced their way into the home in the 3900 block of North Ashland Avenue at 7:45 p.m. Monday.
Police found the baby unresponsive, authorities said. The woman and her son were taken to Thorek Hospital, police said. The baby -- identified as Colin Thies-Keogh by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office -- was pronounced dead at 8:44 p.m.
The state Department of Children and Family Services is investigating an allegation of death by abuse against the mother, spokesman Kendall Marlowe said Tuesday. The agency has had no prior contact with the family and there are no other children in the home, he said.
The mother suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Fire Media Affairs.
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.
