City truck fatally strikes pedestrian on South Side

A person driving a city truck was cited after fatally striking a pedestrian Wednesday afternoon in the Bridgeport neighborhood.

The pedestrian, a 44-year-old man, was struck at 2:57 p.m. in the 2800 block of South Archer Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

He was dead on the scene and his identity was not available late Wednesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, which will perform an autopsy Thursday.

The vehicle that struck the man was a Chicago Department of Transportation truck, Gaines said. The driver stayed at the scene of the crash and received citations for operating the vehicle in reverse and failing to exercise due care for a pedestrian, he said. The identity of the driver was not immediately available.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
