The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore welcomed almost 2.2 million visitors in 2010 — an all-time high and an increase of 11.8 percent over 2009.
Lorelei Weimer, executive director of the Porter County Convention, Recreation and Visitor Commission, said her agency also recorded upticks in hotel stays and in visits to the Dunes State Park last year. She called the positive data part of the silver lining in a bad economy.
“People still like to travel,” she said, adding driving destinations draw visitors when the economy is down.
Almost half a million visitors came to the park in July, the park’s busiest month, and June and August saw more than 300,000 visitors each.
