Two female Lane Tech High School students were hit by a car and injured as they walked from the school to lunch off-campus Wednesday morning.
The girls, one 15 and one 16, were part of a trio crossing the street at Addison and Western at about 11 a.m., witnesses said.
The car hit the teens, then crashed into the northwest corner of a building housing Hero’s sandwich shop, workers there said.
The sidewalk on the west side of Ashland outside the shop was crowded with students walking to area restaurants, and the building likely stopped the car from hitting more people, said Sharon Vitale, whose family owns Hero’s.
“If not for this building, my God, I don’t want to think about what would have happened to all those kids out there,” she said.
While both teens were hospitalized, they have since been released. One teen suffered a broken ankle, while the other was treated for minor injuries.
The driver, George Corso, 61, was also treated and released. Corso, of the 4000 block of North Oakley, was cited with negligent driving, police said.
