An antique French gold piece dropped into a Salvation Army Red Kettle in Evanston is the eighth gold coin to be found in the area this holiday season.

The donated gold coins, in general, are worth about $1,500, the Salvation Army said, noting collector’s items could fetch more. This year, the gifts are worth double after an anonymous donor offered to match any gold coins found in the kettles up to 100. Pioneer Press
