Pigs loose on Indiana Toll Road after semi overturns

(PORTAGE, Ind.) Several pigs on their way to Michigan from central Canada died, while others escaped and were seen wandering onto a ramp after the semi hauling them rolled over on the Indiana Toll Road Monday morning.

Indiana State Police responded to the crash at 11:42 a.m. on westbound I-90 at the 20-mile marker, about 2 1/2-miles west of the Portage Toll, a state police release said.

Truck driver Jakob Konn, 26, of Manitoba, Canada, was exiting the toll road ramp to go east on I-94 when he took the ramp too fast, losing control of the semi as he came around a curve. The semi then fell about 25 feet below onto the I-94 to I-90 west ramp, the release said.

The tractor separated from the trailer and the trailer completely blocked the I-94 to I-90 west bound ramp.

Seventy-nine pigs were on the trailer. While a number of the pigs escaped the overturned trailer, several died. Some were seen wandering on the ramp and grassy area which separated the ramp form I-90 westbound traffic, the release said.

The pigs were coming from Manitoba and were going to Bob Evans Farm in Hillsdale, Mich., the release said.

Konn was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital in Hobart, Ind., with non-life threatening injuries.

Police cited Konn for driving too fast to avoid a collision.

One

lane of westbound traffic remained closed as of 3 p.m. and the I-94 westbound to I-90 westbound ramp is also closed. Long delays are expected in the area, the release said.

Police said animal haulers are en route to the scene for pick up of the surviving animals.
