State Police: Man exits vehicle on Dan Ryan, fatally struck by bus

A bus fatally struck a man who either jumped or fell out of his vehicle early Sunday on the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side.

The man -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as 24-year-old Robert H. Vreeland -- was driving south on the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) and either jumped or fell out of the vehicle about 2 a.m. just north of the 67th Street exit, Illinois State Police District Chicago Trooper Mark Hall said.

The unoccupied vehicle continued south on the expressway, and Vreeland climbed over the cement retaining wall onto the CTA tracks, across another cement retaining wall and into the northbound lanes, where a bus with five passengers aboard then hit him, Hall said.

Vreeland, of the 2500 block of Meadow Drive in Rolling Meadows, was dead on the scene, according to the medical examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for later Sunday.

State Police are investigating.
