A water main broke at a Streeterville intersection Thursday afternoon, briefly flooding nearby streets.
The 12-inch water main below the intersection of McClurg Court and Ohio Street broke sometime before 3:45 p.m., said Department of Water Management spokesman Tom LaPorte.
Because ice and snow was blocking catch basins, the water flowed onto nearby streets, briefly closing Ohio Street between Columbus Avenue and Inner Lake Shore Drive.
The water has since drained away and Department of Streets and Sanitation crews are salting the area, LaPorte said.
The pipe dates to 1932, LaPorte said. Age and weather conditions could both be factors in the break.
“We have an old infrastructure made up of cast iron pipes, a quarter of which are more than a century old,” he said.
Crews won’t know for sure what caused it until utilities give them the approval to safely dig down to the site of the break.
No one is without water service because most high-rise buildings in the area have a second water provider, he said.
