Light snow due on Friday afternoon, 2 to 5 inches forecast for Saturday

Updated: January 17, 2014 12:52AM

A light dusting of snow expected Friday afternoon is just a taste of what the Chicago area could see before the weekend is over.

Light snow showers will move into the area between noon and 1 p.m. Friday, lasting through the early evening and leaving the region with anywhere from a dusting to half an inch of snow, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Birk.

On Saturday, Birk said snow is expected to start falling in the mid- to late morning and last through the afternoon, covering the region with two to five inches.

Chicago and the western suburbs are likely to be hit the hardest, he said.

Next week, we could once again be feeling the effects of the Polar Vortex, which sent temperatures to record lows earlier this month, Birk said. Tuesday’s high temperature could be 10 to 12 degrees, with a low of about zero or slightly lower, he said.

Temperatures could remain much lower than normal through late January and into early February, Birk said.
