Man killed after train strikes van near Robbins

A man died early Wednesday after he drove a van around the crossing gates and was struck by a Metra train Tuesday morning in south suburban Robbins.

Outbound Rock Island District train No. 509 hit the van about 11:10 a.m. Tuesday at the Robbins station near 139th and Utica, according to Metra.

The driver of the van, Emmanuel Allen, 42, of the 600 block of East 83rd, was taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. He was transferred in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital where he died at 1:11 a.m. Wednesday, the medical examiner’s office said.

None of the 30 passengers on the train were injured, according to the Robbins Fire Department.
