A homeless schizophrenic man already jailed for allegedly raping two women in December is now accused of attacking a 3-year-old girl during a robbery outside a Wicker Park church.
James Whiteside, 30, put a knife to the girl’s neck and stuck his fingers down her throat during an attempted carjacking on Dec. 28 in the 1200 block of North Milwaukee, assistant state’s attorney Naheda Zayyad said Monday at Whiteside’s bond hearing before Judge Israel Desierto. The girl suffered a cut to her throat and injuries to her lips and cheeks, Zayyad said.
Whiteside allegedly approached a 29-year-old woman who was fixing her daughter’s hair in a church parking lot. He forced the mother and daughter back into their car by threatening the child at knifepoint, Zayyad said.
The woman emptied her pockets and told Whiteside that her husband had the car keys and he was inside the church, but Whiteside ransacked the vehicle looking for the keys, Zayyad said.
When the woman tried to get away, Whiteside grabbed her and bit her ear, Zayyad said. He then grabbed the girl and stuck his fingers down her throat until she began to bleed.
The woman’s husband came out to check on his family, and Whiteside took the woman’s wedding ring and fled, Zayyad said.
Whiteside was charged with vehicular invasion; aggravated battery to a child younger than 13; attemped aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon; and armed robbery, authorities said.
Whiteside, who already was being held without bond for two alleged sexual assaults on Dec. 27, also appeared Monday before Desierto on a new sexual assault charge.
On Dec. 26, Whiteside approached a woman who had just left a currency exchange in the 7000 block of North Clark, forced her into her car and sexually assaulted her at knifepoint, Zayyad said.
When a passerby knocked on the window, Whiteside attempted to drive to a hotel but the woman jumped out of the car screaming, Zayyad said. In that case, Whiteside was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon; armed robbery, and vehicular hijacking, authorities said. Whiteside was positively identified in a lineup in both cases and gave a video-recorded statement admitting to his role in both attacks, Zayyad said. Desierto ordered him held without bond.
In December, Whiteside was charged with attacking a 69-year-old woman in a secure parking lot in the 4600 block of West 59th Street after she got off the Orange Line and a 23-year-old woman in the 3100 block of North Harlem.
Whiteside’s last known address is in the 600 block of West Deming Place, but he is currently homeless, Assistant Public Defender Sandra Bennewitz said at a December hearing. He suffers from schizophrenia, the defense attorney said.
He has a previous conviction for possession of a defaced firearm and misdemeanor retail theft and resisting arrest and battery.
