Edgewater high-rise blaze caused by ‘human action’: fire official

A high-rise fire in the Edgewater neighborhood Wednesday was “incendiary,” meaning that it was the result of a person’s actions, a fire department spokesman said.

The fire started Wednesday morning in the residential high-rise in the 5800 block of North Sheridan Road, according to police and Fire Media Affair.

But just because a fire has been deemed “incendiary” doesn’t necessarily mean it was started intentionally, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.

He said the investigation has been handed over to police to determine whether it was accidental or arson.

Eight people, including a firefighter, were hospitalized, but their injuries were not life-threatening, according to police and fire officials. Thirty-five residents were displaced.
