A man is in critical condition after fire department crews rescued him from the frigid waters of Lake Michigan near the South Shore neighborhood Thursday.
Someone called 911 about 3:22 p.m. to report a person was in the water near 75th Street, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Juan Hernandez said.
Emergency crews found the man halfway submerged in the lake, and were able to extend a hose line and rope over the ice to pull him out, Hernandez said.
A Chicago Fire Department diver also went into the water after him, Hernandez said.
The water temperature in the lake is roughly 32 degrees Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
The man was taken in critical condition to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he is in serious-to-critical condition, Hernandez said.
