NILES — A 60-year-old Niles man has been charged with shooting a 25-year-old family member inside their home Sunday.
Chris Gianakopoulos, of 7233 W. Greenleaf Ave., Niles was charged with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm for the shooting police said happened after an argument.
Niles Police Sgt. Robert Tornabene, who would not specify the relationship between Gianakopoulos and the victim, said the argument involved the victim’s use of a cell phone.
According to police, other family members in the home reported the two men were arguing near the basement before someone said “I will shoot you,” and a single gunshot was heard.
Gianakopoulos was taken into custody after he was seen running from the home, police said. Police initially released his age as 52, but said he is 60.
The victim was shot in the left arm and leg and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He was initially unable to speak with investigators but is recovering, police said.
Gianakopoulos was to appear in bond court Tuesday.
