Middle-of-night work to give Millennium Park restaurant free gas cost city $390,000

Everyone quickly knew what happened when former Mayor Richard M. Daley tore up Meigs Field in the middle of the night.

But his administration also tore up Michigan Avenue in the dead of night. It happened one Sunday in September 2003, to install a pipe to provide free natural gas to Park Grill, the Millennium Park restaurant whose clout-heavy investors include Daley relatives and friends.

It cost $390,000 to install the pipe, a cost split between the Chicago Park District and City Hall, according to depositions in Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s ongoing lawsuit to break the restaurant deal.
