One resident and a firefighter were listed in stable condition after an early-morning fire Tuesday that spread to a Humboldt Park apartment building from a vacant building next door.

The fire began about 1 a.m. at a 3½-story building in the 3200 block of West Wabansia before spreading to the occupied building next door, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said. It was extinguished about 3 a.m., and the American Red Cross was on the scene to aid 10 displaced residents, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said.

The man was listed in stable condition and taken to Norwegian American Hospital, fire officials said.

The firefighter experienced chest tightness on the scene and was taken to St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital in stable condition, Knight said.

Jacqueline Uriostegui, who was asleep with her daughter when her home caught fire, told reporters at the scene the six people who live in her apartment were able to escape the blaze safely.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
