Bail was set Saturday at $10 million for a University of Illinois student charged with killing his ex-girlfriend to death in an apartment a few blocks north of the school’s campus in Urbana.
Yongfei Ci, 29, of Urbana, a Ph.D. student in math who was taking a course at Brown University in Rhode Island, was arrested at a Champaign motel Friday in the death of Mengchen Huang, a Chinese national, police said.
Huang’s roommate told police that Ci forced his way in to the apartment and locked the roommate in the bathroom.
After he left, the roommate, who wasn’t hurt, ran and got someone to call the police.
Huang was found bound with duct tape, with her throat slit and repeatedly stabbed, a prosecutor said in court Saturday.
