A Chicago police sergeant shot a burglary suspect who allegedly rammed a police vehicle following a pursuit Friday afternoon in the Northwest Side Portage Park neighborhood.
The chase began about 3:30 p.m. after Grand Central District police spotted a vehicle matching the description of one wanted in connection with a burglary in the 6100 block of West Belmont Avenue, according to a police News Affairs statement.
A responding police sergeant began to pursue the vehicle, and tried to curb it in the 5600 block of West Roscoe Avenue, the statement said.
After the sergeant got out of his vehicle, the suspect allegedly rammed the police vehicle in an attempt to flee, police said.
The sergeant, who was on foot, shot “in fear for his life” after the suspect then allegedly accelerated the vehicle at him twice, police said.
The suspect was struck by the gunfire and taken to an area hospital, police said. Charges are pending, and no one else was hurt.
Area North detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating.
