Girl, 2, killed by car; suspect held

Nancy Miller was taking a shower at her home in Englewood early Friday morning when she heard “an awesome noise” and “a lady screaming, ‘Somebody help me, help me.’”
When she got downstairs, Miller said, she saw a little girl on the ground, “really twisted up,” her hysterical grandmother next to her.
The grandmother was so distraught, “she could not even figure out how to work her cell phone,” Miller said.
The grandmother was pushing another child in a stroller and walking with Jamya Love, 2, in the 5600 block of South Morgan when the car hit the girl about 6:25 a.m., police said. Jamya, of the 5700 block of South Peoria, was pronounced dead just after 7 a.m. at University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital.
Miller said the driver took off along Morgan after hitting the child, then smashing Miller’s car parked on the street before speeding away. He tried to run away, but was later arrested by police patrolling the area, police said.
Police believe alcohol may have factored in the crash.
“A beautiful life was taken out here,” Miller said.
My heart goes out to the family,” Miller said. “People don’t care.”
The grandmother was taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. Her condition was not serious, but she’s emotionally distraught, police said.
