ANTIOCH TOWNSHIP — Rescue personnel continued to search Tuesday night for a man presumed drowned in Lake Marie near Antioch.

Antioch Fire Department spokesman Chris Lienhardt said they received a call about a man in the water at 6:21 p.m. just north of the Sandbar Bar and Grille and they arrived with their rescue boat in five minutes.

Four rescue boats and nearly two dozen divers and numerous rescue vehicle were on the scene. At 7:30 p.m., they went into a recovery mode, using side-scan sonar to make a grid search of the lake. They continued searching late Tuesday. If they don’t find the man’s body, Lienhardt said, they’ll resume the search Wednesday morning.

He said there was some kind of mechanical problem with the boat and the man, who was described as 40 to 45 years old, was thought to be trying to fix the problem when he fell in the lake.

Rescue boats from Antioch, Grayslake, Fox Lake and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District were on the scene, according to Nancy Goralski, owner of the Sandbar Bar and Grille at 40870 Douglas Ave. in Antioch Township. She said the divers were going out on shifts, using her dock as a staging area.

“There were people just out in boats . . . who jumped into the lake looking for him, but they didn’t find him,” she said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police were handling the incident.
