Off-duty cop fatally shoots man on Near West Side

An off-duty Chicago cop, working as a security guard, fatally shot a man early Saturday at a Chicago Housing Authority building in the 1800 block of West Monroe Street near the United Center on the city’s Near West Side, according to the police and a police union spokesman.
Marion Horton, 28, was shot once in the chest around 6:45 a.m. and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
The officer, whose name was not released, was working a part-time job as a security officer, according to the police department.
The police Independent Review Authority is investigating the shooting, spokesman Larry Merritt said.
Authorities released few details.
According to a police union spokesman, a female private security officer was trying to get a sleeping man out of the lobby of the building, and the off-duty officer helped her get the man outside.
Shortly after that, the off-duty officer saw the man urinating and went back outside to ask him to leave the area, according to the union spokesman, who said they argued, and the man attacked the female security officer, ripping several braids out of her hair. He said the off-duty cop fired because he thought the man was going for the security guard’s gun and that he identified himself as the police.
