State yanks license of already-closed Sacred Heart Hospital

Updated: September 6, 2013 10:49AM

Illinois regulators have notified the owner of a closed hospital on Chicago’s West Side that the facility’s license has been revoked.

The Illinois Department of Public Health sent the notice earlier this week to Sacred Heart Hospital owner Edward Novak of Park Ridge. He’s been charged in an alleged kickback scheme. The hospital closed its doors in early July, following an FBI raid to gather evidence and the termination of Medicare payments for patient care at the hospital.

The health department’s revocation notice says the hospital “is not fit, willing and able to provide a proper standard of care” required by law.

The hospital can request a hearing to contest the revocation. Novak declined to comment through an attorney on the revocation. He has denied the allegations against him.
