Morton College, a community college in Cicero, received a $4.5 million state grant on Wednesday to build a 10-classroom addition to further the school’s goal of helping minority- and low-income students achieve.
The college has had no new construction since the 1970s, even though it is recognized as part of “Achieving the Dream Initiative,” a nation effort to increase under-represented students’ career success.
The open-enrollment college had 5,459 students in the last academic year.
The 13,250-square-foot addition will house classes in general education and programs in career and technical education.
The grant, announced by Gov. Pat Quinn, comes from the Illinois Jobs Now capital-construction program.
